My team at Newsday Media Group was tasked to drive an increase in digital subscription revenue. By focusing on delivering value to the audience through a series of targeted initiatives, we were able to significantly increase subscriber acquisition and retention. Over a span of two years we were able to increase subscriptions by over 200%.
In an era where consumers are accustomed to accessing news for free, and digital ad revenues are shrinking, the task of converting casual readers into paying subscribers posed a considerable challenge. Convincing users to see the value in paid content required innovative approaches to both the user experience and the subscription process.
I led my team’s work to grow digital subscriptions, from the subscription strategy and article experience to a redesign of the checkout.
Our solution focused on enhancing the customer journey while keeping user engagement intact. Several high-impact initiatives were implemented, including:
As a result of these efforts, Newsday saw a growth of over 200% in digital subscription revenue. The increase in subscriptions was driven by a careful balance between user engagement, optimized product offerings, and value-driven marketing strategies.
This project demonstrates the power of combining user-focused design with targeted subscription strategies to achieve measurable success in the digital media landscape.
Alongside the subscription strategy, I led the redesign of the digital checkout, which had user drop-off rates above industry standards. Qualitative testing showed users were frustrated by too many required fields. We cut the form to the minimum (name, email, and card), collected anything else after subscribing, and built a two-step, on-page checkout so readers could subscribe without leaving the article.
